Elymus repens is a perennial grass native to Europe, Asia, and northwest Africa. Known for its creeping rhizomes, it spreads rapidly and is considered invasive in many regions. Despite its reputation in the garden, dog grass has been valued in traditional European herbalism for centuries. Also called couch grass, quack grass, twitch grass, graminis, and triticum, its dried rhizomes are typically blended into herbal formulations, brewed as tea, or used topically.
Herbalist Nicholas Culpeper famously wrote that “a physician holds that a half acre of dog grass to be worth five acres of carrots twice told over,” highlighting its long-standing medicinal esteem.
