Pimenta dioica

Allspice, also known as Myrtle Pepper, comes from the dried unripe berries of Pimenta dioica, an evergreen shrub native to the Caribbean, southern Mexico, and Central America. Its name reflects its uniquely complex flavor, reminiscent of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger all at once. With a sweet, warm, and spicy aroma, allspice is a staple in Caribbean cuisine, jerk seasoning, mulled cider, and spice blends.

The berries are harvested green and dried into the familiar brown “peppercorns.” Introduced to Europe in the 1600s, allspice remains primarily cultivated in its native warm climates. Whole berries pair beautifully with cardamom, cinnamon, and teas, and can be used in marinades, extracts, and winter beverages.
