Activated charcoal—often called activated carbon—is typically produced from wood, though coconut husks, bamboo, peat, and other carbon‑dense materials can also be used. The raw material is first carbonized, a heating process that transforms it into nearly pure carbon. After carbonization, the material undergoes oxidation, which opens its internal structure and “activates” it, creating the highly porous form used in commercial applications.
